Contingent Fee Agreements
The law firm of Kaup & Shultz, LC, accepts matters on an hourly basis and on a contingent fee basis. The hourly rate
method of payment is easy to understand. However, in a contingent fee case, the law firm does not get paid unless the
client obtains a settlement or a judgment in her favor. The law firm is able to advance the costs of the representation
either before the EEOC or in court, and the client does not have to pay any money up front. If there is a settlement or
judgment in favor the client, then the law firm is reimbursed for its costs.
We understand that many of our clients cannot afford to hire a lawyer on an hourly basis and are happy to take cases on a
contingent fee basis. We try to keep our contingent fee agreement short and easy to understand. We will go through
each provision in the agreement with you. You are free to take the contingent fee agreement home with you so you can
look it over or talk to your spouse about it.

The Law Firm's Mission
At Kaup & Shultz, we strive to provide you with the best legal services
possible. We are a small firm that specializes in only two areas:
employment law and local government law. In doing so, we believe
that we can best serve our clients by thoroughly understanding the
areas in which we practice and by providing our clients with the
personal service they deserve. When you call our firm, you will talk
directly with the persons who are handling your case.
Michael Shultz
The law firm's principal employment attorney is Michael Shultz. Since
graduating first in his law school class, Mike has put in nearly 25 years
as a labor and employment lawyer. He has handled literally hundreds
of employment law issues throughout his career which began in
Denver, Colorado.
From 1986-92, Mike was a professor of law at the University of
Missouri-Kansas City School of Law where he taught many of the
subjects in which he now practices. He has written dozens of
professional articles and has spoken at an equal number of professional
seminars.
Mike has also spent time as a city attorney and as an assistant county
attorney for Johnson County, which has approximately 3,500
employees. From 1999-2003, Mike advised all county department
managers on all labor and employment law issues.
In 2003, Mike went into private practice to focus on the representation
of Kansas employees with a commitment to providing them with the
highest quality of legal services possible. Employers are able to obtain
high quality legal representation, and employees should be able to do
the same thing.
"Sex discrimination in the workplace is simply far too
common. Perhaps the worst form of that discrimination is
sexual harassment. As a husband whose wife works and a
father with a daughter who is about to enter the
professional world, I am committed to helping Kansas
employees understand their legal rights and what actions
they might take when their rights are violated. It would be
a privilege to work with you.
You do have rights. Make them matter."
Mike Shultz
